The most important technique for the analytical lab is currently flow cytometry (FCM). The most common use of flow cytometry in our lab is for determination of the DNA amount, ploidy level of a plant, to determine aneuploidy, or to detect interspecific hybrids. These assays can be done on leaf tissue, but also directly on the seed.
The quality aspect of plants is becoming more and more important. However, pathogen infections do not always present with clear symptoms. PCR tests can be used as a tool to determine these infections. In 2010 Iribov started its own molecular laboratory for quality control in tissue culture plants using PCR.
In order to better understand crossing barriers, we can follow the development of pollen after fertilisation. This is done through microscopy. Besides this we also offer determination of pollen viability and can do research on, for example, the effect of storage conditions on pollen viability.
The development of molecular techniques has led to some new approaches for plant breeding. However, the need for a molecular lab facility is a major barrier for many breeding companies looking to use these techniques.
