Ploidy Analysis

Ploidy analysis is used to detect doubled (or halved) chromosome sets. In practice it can be used for:

  • Detecting (di)haploids and tetraploids
  • Screening seedlots for abberant ploidy levels
  • Detection of chimeric plants (different ploidy levels in one plant)

Besides ploidy analysis, we also offer chromosome counting as a service.

Flow cytometry

Flow cytometry analysis of ploidy involves staining nuclei from cells with a fluorescent dye, such as DAPI, which binds to DNA. By plotting the DNA content from hundreds or thousands of individual nuclei, different ploidy patterns can be distinguished. These ploidy measurements can be used to select for plant progeny with different desired traits.
